Perfect for the avid reader who enjoys magazines as well as novels, or the student looking for a more compact and portable manner for accessing their textbooks, the NOOKcolor comes with many additional features.

Readers have asked for a better touch screen interface and the designers of the device heeded the call. Unlike the original Nook, the 7 inch screen is also a very good touch screen interface. The interface is highly responsive, although it can be disrupted by fingerprints. I recently discovered this during a game of Sodoku, which happens to come pre-installed.

The NOOKcolor's organization is automatic and most readers will be happy with the library features that catalog books according to title, author or genre.

Speaking of games, many of the ads for the device stress the fact that it has an Android operating system. This is true, but perhaps a bit misleading. The Android OS is a hybrid of Android 2.1, meaning that the device cannot take advantage of the Android Marketplace or any of the previously designed applications. There is a developer toolkit available and Barnes and Noble says applications will be available soon.

This is not a downfall for those who intent to use the eReader as it was intended, to read books. The interface and display are excellent for anyone who wants a high quality LCD display that offers brilliant color and crisp text. Of course, LCD screens are linked to eyestrain and are not effective for use in bright sunshine. Also, battery life is known to be affected by LCD screens. The device offers excellent battery life, however.

The device does not have built in 3G and relies on a WiFi connection to enable users to purchase or download books to the device. There is a built in beta version web browser that provides access to the internet where a WiFi connection is available. Other eReaders come with built in 3G networking, but with the wide availability of wireless networks it is not really necessary.

For specs and comparison to the Kindle, and where to buy see my eReader review at http://www.ereadertrend.com

Rod Jamieson is a retired pilot and TV reporter for CBS. Office applications are important for working people. Good news is that with the availability of the Nook Tablet and Amazon Kindle Fire, more people are looking to do more with these e-book readers due to their cheaper prices. I would like to share my experience using those applications. There are six main applications but in this article, I will cover Documents To Go and Kingsoft Office.

DataViz's Documents To Go

This is one of my favourite "document manager" applications. I have been using this for quite some time on my smartphones and Apple's Ipad. Currently, the Android version is available in the Android Market. You can either download the free version or the full version for $29.99. Just like on other platforms, Dataviz focuses on maintaining the original document formatting through their InTact Technology. With this aim in mind, you will not see degradation in your office document. It is very attractive and looks awesome on your device.

This application starts up in a file browser page and you have the following options to gain access to documents:

1) Recent files

2) Local files

3) Starred files

4) Google Documents

5) Desktop files

I personally like the gear icon on the lower right on the main page as it gives me direct access to check for updates, view advance options, managing my desktop and others. It also comes with other important modules such as Word To Go, Sheet To Go, Slideshow To Go and PDF To Go.

Kingsoft Office

This application is an office document viewer for Android platform devices. Again, you have the free and paid version. It includes three parts namely; Word reader, Excel reader and PowerPoint reader. Best part is, it supports many different types of file formats such as .doc,.docx,.txt,.ppt,.xls and others. You can create, view and edit desktop documents created by Microsoft Word and Excel.

I personally love the cloud storage which allows me to save and share files amongst multiple computers through the online cloud service. When you launch this application, the welcome page itself will guide you through its features. There are many icons and toolbars for you to navigate around this application. The only problem with the toolbar is that it is too long and you have to swipe and pan your fingers across to see all the functions.

Some of the functions that I find useful are:

1) View all documents

2) Email a document

3) Duplicate an existing document

4) Send a document to the cloud

Other functions are basically creating and deleting documents, browse folders and view their help files. Same like Documents To Go, you have the Word, Excel and PowerPoint module. Sad part is, you cannot create PowerPoint slides with this application.

Overall, Kingsoft Office supports external Bluetooth keyboards and things such as shortcut keys for quick text entry and manipulation. This can save a whole load of your time!

I will cover OfficeSuite Pro and Polaris Office in the next article. I hope these information will help you to understand more about Office applications in the Nook Tablet.

If you want to find out more about other e-book readers, or the Nook Tablet just go to www.buynooktablet.com.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Gerald_Soh

http://EzineArticles.com/?Nook-Tablet-and-Office-Applications&id=6730248

Barnes & If you'd like to explore your options beyond the Kindle before deciding on one to purchase, read through this guide on what factors and features you should pay attention to. There are excellent alternatives to the Kindle, and once you've narrowed down your requirements, you'll be better equipped to make an informed choice and reduce your confusion.

Size and Weight

This is probably the most important feature to focus on: what's the size of the screen (and hence the reader) and what's the weight? The average size for most readers is approximately 7" (inches) diagonally. But screen size varies from 6" to as much as 10" or more. Screen size is also highly correlated with the weight of the reader. If you imagine that you'd like to hold the reader with one hand, you'll probably want to stay under 9oz (about 250g). The 10" readers can weigh in at twice that amount of even more.

Display

There are a number of factors under this category, including whether you'd to have a touchscreen (or touch screen), and a color or black & white screen. Currently, the dominant technology used to create an image closest resembling a book's printed pages is e-Ink, and it is primarily grayscale although a color version is slowly starting to show up in some products.

Most eReaders do not have touchscreens. Think of it this way: do you feel a need to touch the pages of your books in order to scroll the text? Not likely, and as such most eReaders are designed with simple and large forward and back buttons. However, consider this: if you think of the Apple iPad as a type of eReader, the touchscreen is an integral and powerful component to its interface.

Network Access

Network access is another significant factor for many people, although we're quickly moving to the point where at least WiFi (wireless networking) capability is an expected feature. If you'd rather not have to connect your eReader to a computer every time you wanted to update the books on it, then you need network connectivity, Wi-Fi at a minimum and quite possibly 3G (4G in the not-so-distant future) as well.

Battery Life

The battery life is another important feature particularly if you travel a lot. With Wi-Fi turned off, most devices have anywhere from 10 days to 1 month of standard book reading and standby time. Pay attention to the specs provided by the manufacturer and assume it's closer to 75% of what they state.

Storage

I don't feel that this is quite that important of a factor. Even devices with a relatively low 2GB of storage can hold somewhere around 2000 eBooks. If you can purchase and read that many books before it's time to upgrade or buy a new device, then you fall into a very unique category!

Search

Considering how many books these small devices can hold, even when you approach a few dozen books, you'll want the ability to quickly search for titles and/or authors. And you'll also want the ability to search through books, particularly educational and reference once.

Highlighting and Annotation

If you do use your eReader to store and read educational and reference books, then you may definitely want the ability to highlight and annotate the content.

Formats Supported and eBooks Available for the eReader

As with any newly developing technology, there are multiple and sometimes competing formats including ePub, Mobi, PDF, APK and more. Another lesser factor is what the eBook marketplace is like for the device. However, these are not show-stoppers, as there are ways to convert between the various eBook formats. What really matters is how much of a convenience factor you'd like. But for the most part, vendors put in the effort to infuse their eReaders with multiple format support.

A related issue is that of DRM (Digital Rights Management). Some eReaders and the markets that you must sometimes purchase from enforce DRM on the eBooks which typically means it's either difficult or impossible to copy those books to other devices you own or to replace them for free should you lose the eReader.

Security

Do think about the security on the eReader and that of the books on it as you could be the victim of your device being stolen. The larger vendors such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble store your book subscriptions, so you would be able to recover your books should your device be stolen, but this isn't the case with all devices.

Cost

Naturally you'll want to consider the price of the device. Ereaders have come down tremendously in price over the past few years and products like the Kindle and Nook which sit at the top of the heap, are relatively cheap. For example, the Kindle WiFi, Kindle WiFi +3G and Nook are all under currently under US$200. So you should not pay much more for an eReader unless it greatly exceeds the capabilities found in those devices.

Conclusion

Don't feel overwhelmed with this seemingly long list of criteria. Some you may not care about; for example, storage. Just write down what your minimum requirements are, and eliminate any products that don't meet them. Pick your eReader and look forward to curling up with your favorite thousand books in the palm of your hand.

Khalid J Hosein is a blogger, computer consultant and tech geek who runs a gadget blog, http://GizmosForGeeks.com, where you can find the latest in gadget and technology news, insights, howtos and much more.
